One of the many changes triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has been the increase in the number of people working remotely, which has significantly affected how we run cross-functional-team improvement activities. In the past, most of our improvement activities such as kaizen events, value stream mapping, and hoshin kanri sessions have been done in person. This proved to be a highly effective way to engage employees, surface problems, collaborate on the design of countermeasures, and drive buy-in. But in many situations that is no longer possible, or practical. Not in a position to stop getting better, we have had to explore how to engage without gathering everyone in the same space for many organizations.
